How to Choose the Right Fabric for Your Soft Furnishings

Fabric choice plays a significant role in the look and feel of your home. Whether it’s upholstery, curtains, or cushions, selecting the right material enhances both comfort and durability.

Many reputable furniture manufacturers provide a range of fabric options or allow customers to supply their own. If you’re customising furniture, it’s essential to understand the characteristics of different fabrics.

One of the most important considerations is avoiding fire-retardant fabrics that have been chemically treated. In some countries, such as the UK, regulations require fire-resistant upholstery, which can expose residents to harmful substances.

Instead, opting for natural fabrics like wool is a safer alternative, as wool is inherently fire-resistant without needing chemical treatment.

When choosing fabrics, aim for those with a high percentage of natural fibres, ideally around 70% or more. If fire safety regulations require additional protection, using an interliner beneath the fabric can minimize direct contact with treated materials.

Comfort, durability, and environmental impact should all be considered when selecting fabrics for your home.
